Skiing in Avoriaz

The village of Avoriaz sits at 1800 metres and is accessed from either the Super Morzine bubble in the main high street of Morzine or via the Prodains Gondola further up the mountain from Morzine.

It is the first area to open in December with the grand 650km Portes Du Soleil domain and the last to close in late April/sometimes May! Many of the runs reach over 2500m and with 6 black, 14 red and 26 blue runs there's plenty to keep any level of skier occupied.

For the most adventurous of all you could try the Interdit run (Forbidden) known as the "Swiss Wall" Urban legends of deaths on the piste are whispered amongst skiers as they throng at the top of the run, wondering if they are next. Conditions have to be right for this run - too icy is extremely dangerous and poor visibility make it difficult to navigate the best way down. A clear, cold day after a recent snowfall is best. Or you could cop out and have a hot chocolate and a crepe at the top and make your way back down the pistes on the opposite side of the ridge. The Swiss Wall is also one of the main ways into Switzerland but they have helpfully added a downward chairlift so you can film friends going down it or just point out the people with style, skill or getting down it quickest - usually on their backside!

You could take some time away from skiing to enjoy the spa facilities in Avoriaz, perhaps a morning skiing and an afternoon in the spa? Remember this is your holiday - relax and ski as hard as you like! Or ski for the day, have your spa visit and take the gondola back down in time for dinner!
